I recently discovered a blog, called Not That Kind of Girl, about one girl’s adventures as she tries 250 things that are uncharacteristic of her normal behaviour. Its a pretty interesting read about pushing your boundaries and trying new and different things. Yesterday was a day of many firsts for me. The original plan was to go have breakfast, go to the Vancouver Baker’s Market and then hit Main St. for some shopping. I did that, and soooo much more.
Breakfast was amazing – shanghainese dim sum! The Baker’s Market was disappointing. It was a lot smaller than I thought it would be. I almost felt like if I wanted to, I could print up a bunch of business cards, bake up a storm and have my own table (read my full thoughts here). I was meeting up with a bunch of friends here, and they ended up deciding to go to the Aritzia warehouse sale where I actually bought something – a first. Next I headed to the Vancouver Flea Market – I’ve never been before. I ended up purchasing some jewelry – used of course, another first. I’ve always had qualms about purchasing previously worn clothing and jewelry, but I threw that out the window and just went with the flow. Finally, I made it to Main St. and wandered around, exploring.
That evening, I went to a vegan place for dinner – another first – followed by BINGO. I can see how people can get addicted to bingo. The sheets were pretty inexpensive at $1 per game. Our group was louder than the rest of the people there and we got some pretty angry glares from the other participants. The employees were really good about helping us out though as most of us had never gone to bingo before.
Finally, I met up with a different group of friends for some dessert. I ordered a cheesecake, but it wasn’t very good. It wasn’t until I was half way through the cake that I realized what it was – there was too much salt! The balance of the cake was off. Normally, typical me would have just brushed it off and not have said anything, but for some reason, when the waitress came around this happened:
Waitress: Are you still working on your cheesecake?
Me: No, I think I’m done.
Me: [thinks a bit, then goes for it] Is the cake made in –house?
Waitress: Yep its made here.
Me: Oh, cause I think there might be too much salt in it.
Waitress: Oh! I’m sorry about that. I’ll take that off your bill. [proceeds to clear the table]
I had NO idea where that came from. I’ve never complained about food at a restaurant before, more out of not wanting to be awkward. For some reason afterwards I felt SO guilty! I felt like I should have still paid for the bit I ate. My intentions wasn’t to not pay for it, but rather to let the kitchen know that they should probably stop serving that particular cake. I wonder if I was right, if there was actually too much salt in the cake. It had the weirdest aftertaste.
So in the course of one day, I tried a number of new things, behaved uncharacteristically and explored an area of my city. Not bad for a random Saturday.
Have you ever complained about food at a restaurant? What did you do about it?
