Today I was suppose to go to Seattle for an over night trip, but things didn’t work out the way that we had planned. I got off work at 2, and raced home. We were probably at the border by 3:30 and that’s when things started falling apart.
One of my friends doesn’t hold a Canadian passport. Instead the passport is from a country that requires you to leave the country with at least 6 months before the expiry date of the passport. The passport expires in June – definitely not meeting the 6 month period required.
They asked us to pull over and we had to go speak with US Immigration. This was a first for me. They asked us a couple of questions and explained the law to us. After consulting with the supervisor, unfortunately, my friend who did not have a Canadian passport was not allowed into the US.
The border guard gave us two options: leave the friend there and continue on to Seattle, or drive the friend back across. The obvious choice was to drive back. Apparently the walk back is 9 hours!
So my friends and I spent 2 hours waiting at the border; waiting to enter the US and then waiting to go back to Canada. I’m sure years down the road, we’ll think back to this little “trip around the flagpole” and think it is hilarious. It’ll be like How I Met You Mother when they reminisce about events past.
