Foods from Abroad

Gadling had a post the other day about food discoveries while traveling and that made me think about all the foods that I tried in Europe and the different brands that I started to like while I was there. I just hosted a German couch surfer and she left me a bunch of German candies that I had discovered while I was in Maastricht. It brought a little of my experiences abroad to me here at home. It made me smile and reminisce about my semester away.

The biggest thing I miss the most are probably the frites with the huge selection of sauces. Its such a great snack, especially after a night out.

Another thing I really liked while I was there, were the Turkish doner places that seemed to be everywhere. When I was in Rotterdam, there was this place that combined both the frites and the doner toppings into the best snack ever. Definitely cannot find anything like that here – well I haven’t found anything like it (and I can’t find any pictures).

Then there are the stroopwafels. Those were amazing – especially the ones that you get on the street. Warm and gooey <3 I’ve found smaller packages of stroopwafels so when I’m really feeling nostalgic I still have access.

Finally, the Belgium waffles – they weren’t like the ones we get here with the fruit on top (though I did try some that came like that), the best ones had the syrupy sweetness baked into the dough so when it came off the griddle, it was one sweet, warm and fluffy treat. They were great to snack on while walking.

These are only the major things I miss about the Netherlands. Tried a bunch of other things around Europe that were pretty good. More about that later…
